Similarly, feedback can have different effects on the goal-setting and motivation processes, depending on whether it compares, instructs or simply describes (Feedback Intervention Theory, Kluger and DeNisi, 1996).

Our study investigates how feedback is used in a behavioral game to influence participants’ motivation to play the game. The results show that the extent to which participant’s need for competence and autonomy are satisfied in the game significantly predicts their intrinsic motivation to play the game both immediately after and in the future. Moreover, we found that evaluative feedback positively influences both immediate and long-term motivation, while non-valuative feedback does not affect either.

Our findings show that pedagogical feedback is essential for motivating behavior change in gaming and other learning contexts. This approach changes the role of teachers from a container of knowledge to a facilitator who helps students build their own learning experiences.
